Visit the house of a Thai Prince…
Prince Chumbhotpong Paripatra and his wife gifted his home to the general public to become a museum in 1952. This act of generosity has yet to be repeated and holds true distinction with its combination of conventional architecture, assembly of artifacts and graceful garden. Architect enthusiasts and lovers of Thai history are sure to be delighted in this museum.
The museum holds a belly full of artifacts dating from as early as the 7th century. Family heirlooms of the Prince and his wife are also on display including clothing and other personal objects of interest. In 1996 a new building was added to house archeological findings from the Ban Chiang archeological site which dates as far back as 4,000 years, rating it to the Stonehenge or Indus Valley civilizations. A Khon Mask collection that is traditionally used in classical Thai dancing can also be found. The Marci Gallery which is a part of the museum is used as an exhibition center to promote local artists.
The museum is made up of five traditional two-storey Thai houses of which four are connected by covered bridges on the second floor, limiting the number of time you have to climb up and down a staircase. The houses are in the shape of a ring and set in a garden that has Japanese influence in its landscape design. Perhaps the most impressive structure of them all is the Lacquer Pavillion which is over 200 years old and was originally placed in a monastery. The pavilion has the distinct feature of having a room within a room. Upon entering the pavilion you will come across a narrow corridor that is made of intricately carved gleaming wood and the room within this corridor features carvings that are equally ornate and enthralling.
The Suan Pakkad Palace Museum is preserved for its posterity and priceless national treasures. Located at Si Ayuthaya Road the museum is best reached by sky train. Finding the most centrally located accommodation is crucial in order to have easy access to key attractions. Stay at one of the best Bangkok serviced apartments such as Bangkok Grand President which offers easy access to the sky train.
